This term, students have been focusing on our CORE Value of being charitable. In September, both staff and students took part in hosting a Macmillan Coffee Morning. The event involved baking real cakes and creating display-only ‘fake’ cakes. (Rest assured, only the real cakes were sold and enjoyed!) The decorative cakes were exhibited for visitors, then judged after lunch, with several Best in Show certificates awarded.
Alongside the fun, the day also highlighted the important work that Macmillan carries out. We began with an assembly about cancer – what it is, how it can be treated (often, though not always), and the lifestyle choices that can help reduce risk.
Staff were deeply impressed by the maturity students showed when engaging with such an emotive topic, as well as by their enthusiasm and commitment to raising money for a meaningful cause. Pollyteach raised over £125 on the day. We learnt about cancer and the valuable work that Macmillan do. We showed off our creative skills and had a great time too.
