How We Support New and Returning Students at Pollyteach

Starting a new school year can feel daunting, whether a student is joining Pollyteach for the first time or returning after a break. Changes to routine can create additional anxiety, so we focus on familiar routines, supportive staff and small class sizes to help every student feel settled, supported and ready to learn.

From the moment students arrive, they are welcomed from transport by familiar staff, including Dottie, our Pollyteach dog. Students who need additional support can also be met by their key worker or a trusted member of staff before heading to their learning area to reconnect with familiar staff and peers.

The school day follows a consistent routine. Students begin with breakfast and Talking Wall, a small-group discussion of topical issues in a friendly and informal environment. Learning then starts at 10am, with three core subject sessions followed by break and a warm, healthy lunch.

The final session focuses on well-being and gives students the opportunity to take part in activities such as sport, art, games, puzzles, off-site visits and volunteering in the local community.

Supporting students in the first few weeks

Consistency continues throughout the first few weeks, helping both new and returning students settle into school life. Students help create their own classroom agreements, making expectations clear and giving them a voice in their learning environment.

They also complete a baseline progress check with staff support. This helps the team understand each student’s starting point and make sure learning is pitched at the right level.

New and returning students follow a similar timetable, helping students build friendships and become part of the Pollyteach community.

With familiar faces, consistent routines and a supportive learning environment, Pollyteach is helping students start a new school year feeling confident, connected and ready to thrive.
